Root Chakra symbol and associations

Muladhara (Root Chakra)

Before energy can move upward, it must first feel safe to settle. The Root Chakra, known as Muladhara, forms the foundation of the energy system. It governs our sense of safety, stability, belonging, and our relationship with the physical body and the world around us.

This first day of the Chakra Series invites us to gently arrive in the body, explore grounding and support, and listen to what our system needs in order to feel steady and held.

When the Root Chakra is balanced, we feel steady, present, and supported by life. There is a sense of being rooted in the body and anchored in the moment.

When this chakra is asking for attention, we may experience anxiety, restlessness, fatigue, or fear around security. These imbalances often appear in the body first, showing up as tight hips, heavy legs, or even constipation before we become aware of them emotionally.

The Root Chakra Through a Reiki Lens

From a Reiki perspective, the Root Chakra is not something to force open or activate. It responds best to slowness, consistency, and gentle reassurance.

This energy center holds our earliest experiences of safety. It reflects how we learned to trust the world, our caregivers, and our own bodies. Within Reiki practice, healing here unfolds through presence rather than pressure. Gentle awareness allows energy to settle in its own time.

If this chakra feels tender, that is okay. There is no urgency. The Root Chakra reminds us that stability is built gradually.

Signs the Root Chakra May Be Calling for Attention

You might notice:

  • Feeling disconnected from your body

  • Anxiety around money, work, or basic needs

  • Difficulty resting or fully relaxing

  • Ongoing stress patterns that can leave the body feeling depleted or stuck in a heightened state of alertness, sometimes accompanied by weight changes

  • A sense of not belonging, or feeling constantly on edge

  • Tightness or discomfort in the hips, legs, feet, or lower back

  • Digestive stagnation, such as constipation, which can reflect difficulty processing and releasing emotional experiences

Rather than labeling these experiences as problems, we can see them as messages. They offer information that can gently guide us back toward balance, safety, and support.

Gentle Ways to Support the Root Chakra

Today’s focus is not on doing more, but on allowing support in.

Simple ways to connect with the Root Chakra include:

  • Spending time barefoot on the Earth, even briefly

  • Eating warm, grounding foods such as root vegetables, soups, or slow cooked meals

  • Slowing the breath and gently lengthening the exhale

  • Placing your hands at the base of the spine or on the thighs and noticing sensation

  • Creating a small ritual that signals safety, such as warmth, repetition, stillness, or tea.

  • A Tarot pull can also be a gentle way to check in and listen inward

The energy system is closely connected to nourishment and physical support. Foods grown close to the Earth, especially root vegetables and naturally red foods, offer minerals and warmth that help the body feel steady and supported. Protein rich meals can provide structure and sustained energy when the nervous system feels taxed.

Rather than focusing on rules or perfection, let this be an invitation to notice how your body responds. Eating slowly, with warmth and presence, is often just as supportive as what is on the plate.

Consistency matters more than intensity. Small, steady practices help build trust in the body over time.

Gentle Self Massage for the Root Chakra

Massage Therapy reminds us that safety is often felt through touch. Gentle self massage can help calm the nervous system, bring awareness back into the body, and offer steady support to the Root Chakra.

You might explore:

  • Slowly massaging the soles of the feet using your thumbs or a massage ball, noticing areas that feel tender or tired

  • Applying gentle, consistent pressure to the calves and thighs with long, grounding strokes

  • Bringing attention to the fascia through slow, intuitive movement, allowing tissues to soften without force

  • Placing warm hands over the hips or sacrum and holding still for several breaths, offering reassurance through contact

Move slowly and let the body set the pace. The intention is not to fix or release anything, but to offer presence, warmth, and care.

If you find yourself craving deeper support, working with a massage therapist can be a powerful way to help the body feel held and at ease. At Sip for Your Soul, our RMT's approach massage as a grounding, nervous system aware practice, creating space for the body to soften and settle safely.

You deserve support that meets you where you are.

Supportive Root Chakra Asanas

These yoga poses support grounding and connection with the lower body. Move with awareness and pause whenever needed.

Tadasana (Mountain Pose):

Stand tall and feel your feet connect with the Earth beneath you. Notice the weight of your body being fully supported as you root evenly through all four corners of the feet. Align the feet under the hips, hips under the shoulders, and imagine a gentle lift through the crown of the head.

When you feel stable, you may experiment with leaning the body slightly back as if supported by an invisible wall, maintaining alignment and ease. This may take time. Your nervous system is worth the patience.

Benefits:Mountain Pose improves posture, balance, and body awareness. It strengthens the legs and stabilizing muscles while encouraging proper alignment through the spine. Energetically, Tadasana activates the Root Chakra, fostering a sense of safety, grounding, and steady presence. It reminds the body that it is supported.

Balasana (Child’s Pose):

Allow the nervous system to soften as the body folds inward and rests close to the ground. Bring the toes together with the knees under you or wider, allowing space for the hips. Sit tall for a moment, lengthen the spine, then slowly walk the hands forward until the chest settles comfortably toward the floor.

With each inhale, feel gentle length through the body. With each exhale, allow yourself to soften a little more.

Benefits:Child’s Pose gently stretches the lower back, hips, and ankles while calming the mind. It encourages diaphragmatic breathing and helps regulate the stress response. Energetically, Balasana supports the Root Chakra by creating a feeling of protection, grounding, and emotional safety. It is a posture of surrender and reassurance.

Malasana (Yogic Squat):

With the feet hip width apart or wider, lower into a deep squat and allow the hips and knees to open naturally. You may place your hands on the Earth in front of you for added support. If it feels safe, bring the hands together at the heart and gently guide the knees outward with the elbows, keeping the spine tall and steady.

You may stay in these asanas for a few breaths or longer. Trust what feels supportive in the moment.

Root Chakra Affirmation

Use this two line affirmation during meditation, Reiki self treatment, massage, or quiet reflection:

"I am supported by the Earth beneath me.
I am safe to be here, exactly as I am."

Let the words land gently. There is no need to convince yourself of anything.

The Muladhara reminds us that healing begins with safety. Today is not about reaching upward. It is about arriving fully in the present moment.

Tomorrow, we continue the journey by exploring flow, creativity, and emotional movement through the Svadhisthana (Sacral Chakra).

With presence and support,

Nikita Orlukiewicz
